The 5th arrondissement of Paris is located on the left bank of the Seine river. It comprises mainly Saint-Germain-des-Pres quarter on the north side and the Luxembourg garden on the south.
Saint-Germain-des-Pres area was during last decades and still today the heart of the cultural and intellectual life in Paris. Many artists, philosophers and writers still live in this quarter or simply stroll along the streets and in cafes such as Les Deux Magots or Café de Flore. Antique shops and art galleries are often side by side. In those conditions, you can't be surprised to find here cultural intitutions such as l'Institut de France, the Theatre de l'Odéon or the Ecole des Beaux Arts. There are also many schools and universities but less than in the 5th arrondissement.
In the south of the 6th district, the Luxembourg garden welcomes walkers, runners and studiants. We can also find there the Palais du Luxembourg with the Senat in it.
